Is there a co-parenting app that also tracks shared expenses?

What counts as a shared expense?
Shared expenses are the costs of raising your children that you agree to split as they come up. They sit alongside any regular child maintenance, not instead of it.
Official UK guidance gives a feel for what families usually include:
- Cafcass's parenting plan asks how you will share day-to-day costs for clothes, school trips and larger items like computers and musical instruments, and how you will handle pocket money.
- GOV.UK says a private child maintenance arrangement can include one parent paying for things like housing, school uniform, trips or clubs.
- The Department for Work and Pensions' arrangement guide names birthdays and school trips as extra expenses to think about.
Most families add their own: school shoes, phone contracts, a residential trip, a new bike.
Is a shared expense the same as child maintenance?
No. Child maintenance is a regular arrangement for how a parent contributes to a child's everyday living costs. You can agree it between yourselves or go through the Child Maintenance Service, and GOV.UK explains both. Shared expenses are the one-off and occasional costs you agree to split on top. An app can keep a clear record of those costs. It does not set or calculate child maintenance.
How do you agree a fair split?
There is no single right split. What matters is that you both agree it and can see it written down. A simple order that works for many families:
- List the categories you will share, such as uniform, trips, clubs, birthdays and big one-offs.
- Agree a split for each. Some parents split everything 50/50; others use a different split for different costs.
- Agree a spending limit above which you check with each other before buying.
- Agree how receipts are shared and when you settle up, for example at the end of each month.
- Set a review date. The DWP guide suggests reviewing an arrangement perhaps every six months, or when circumstances change.
If you cannot agree, family mediation can help. GOV.UK lists it as one way to make child arrangements without going to court.
How does Haevn handle shared expenses?
Haevn's Co-Parenting space is built for two homes, and it is included in the same plan as the rest of family life.
- Shared expenses with any split, so one parent can log a cost and both can see what is owed.
- A shared calendar for two homes, so the school trip and its cost sit in the same place.
- Messages that cannot be edited or deleted, with a tone check before a message is sent.
- A verified export of the record.
- One subscription for both parents: £6.99 a month or £69.99 a year, with 14 days free and no card needed.
Haevn has no free tier. If you are still working out the weekly rota, the custody time calculator and the co-parenting schedule planner are free to use. More on how Haevn works for separated families: Haevn for co-parenting.
Frequently asked questions
Can we split costs 70/30 instead of 50/50?
Yes, if you both agree. In Haevn, each shared expense can be split at any percentage. OurFamilyWizard also offers a custom split. For TalkingParents, AppClose and 2Houses, a custom split is not stated in the sources we checked on 18 October 2026.
Does an expense-tracking app replace child maintenance?
No. Child maintenance is a separate arrangement, agreed between parents or made through the Child Maintenance Service. An expense app keeps a record of the extra costs you agree to share. GOV.UK explains how child maintenance works.
Do both parents need to pay for the app?
It depends on the app. OurFamilyWizard and TalkingParents charge each parent, and with AppClose each parent subscribes. 2Houses is per family. One Haevn subscription, £6.99 a month or £69.99 a year, covers both parents. See do both parents have to pay for a co-parenting app.
What should we do if we disagree about a cost?
Agree in advance which costs need a yes from both of you before anyone spends. If a disagreement keeps coming back, family mediation can help you reach an agreement. GOV.UK lists mediation as one way to make child arrangements.
