Question

Is Google Calendar enough for a family, or do you need a family app?

The Haevn team4 minute readLast verified

For many families, Google Calendar is enough if everyone has a Google Account and dates are the only thing you need to share. A family app earns its place when the plan spreads beyond the calendar: shopping lists, meals, chores, bills and who is doing the school run. The real question is how many places your household runs on.

What does Google Calendar offer families?

    • When you create a family group on Google, a calendar called "Family" is created automatically. Everyone in the family group can find it in Google Calendar.
    • A family group can have up to 6 people.
    • The family manager needs a personal Google Account, not a work or school one, and must be above the age of majority in their country. Everyone in the group needs the same Google Play country.
    • You can only change family groups once every 12 months. Someone who leaves the group loses access to the family calendar.

    When is Google Calendar enough?

Google Calendar is likely to be enough when:

    • everyone already has a personal Google Account and is happy to use it
    • six people or fewer need to see the plan
    • what you share is mostly dates and times
    • lists, meals and household admin already work well somewhere else

If that sounds like your house, there is no need to add another app.

When does a family app make more sense?

A family app tends to earn its place when:

    • More than six people need the plan. Haevn covers up to 8 members on one plan.
    • The plan is more than dates. In Haevn, the shared calendar sits alongside Lists, Meal Planner, Chores, Pot for the household budget and House for bills, warranties and documents.
    • Some people should only see part of it. Carer Mode gives a helper or grandparent limited access.
    • Children live across two homes. Co-Parenting adds a shared calendar for two homes and Child View, a read-only calendar for children.
    • The family reads in more than one language. Haevn works in 16 languages.

Can you use Google Calendar and a family app together?

Yes. Plenty of families keep work in Google Calendar or Outlook and the household plan in one shared place. In Haevn, one click adds an event to Google or Outlook. Two-way sync is coming soon. For more on keeping the two apart, see how to sync work and family calendars.

    What does Haevn cost?

Haevn is £6.99 a month or £69.99 a year for up to 8 members, with 14 days free and no card needed. There is no free tier. There is no native iOS or Android app yet: Haevn is a web app that installs to the home screen on any phone.
